for a little while now, i've been trying to decide what language i want to learn. what are your picks for the coolest (like, kool and hip) languages that i could learn to be awesome and stick out from the crowd? thanks a lot for your time.
first and foremost i recommend spanish, but that's simply my bias. very widely spoken although it randomly does weird things that i could never explain to non-natives.
portuguese is also very widely spoken and it might benefit you to learn it. i know only a conversational level of it, but it is easier if you know spanish already.
russian is a tough one to learn and to master, since it keeps throwing random things that somehow interact underneath. but it's rewarding and it's a pretty widely used language. other slavic languages are good picks too, slavic languages are closer to each other than they seem.
german is a pretty smooth and easy language to learn in my opinion, i don't know how hard it is to master but i will say that it randomly does throw curveballs at you and sometimes sentences just look like an amalgamation of random particles with an actual sentence interspersed.
leaving PIE, arabic is a pretty cool language that i'd like to get to some day. its grammar is very interesting with triconsonantal roots and its phonology is interesting too... although i will never be able to pronounce 3 or 7.
if you ignore practicality some interesting languages are quechua, nahuatl, inuktitut and at least 1 australian aboriginal language (i am sorry i do not know anything about them, i only know they have interesting things going on syntax-wise).
if you want some things closer to english, you could choose dutch, afrikaans, frisian or similar languages. or perhaps give the scandinavian ones some love!
finnish and estonian are really alien and they have a mind-blowing amount of grammatical cases, but they're quite charming. hungarian is also part of this group in my mind.
and to end it off, indian languages are pretty cool: tamil and hindi are interesting languages that i'd like to learn at least something about some day.
of course, i've missed some languages, eg chinese, japanese and korean. but the textbox here is likely limited.
which one should you pick? it depends. are you going for practicality (do you want to access other sides of the internet)? then maybe pick one of the most widely spoken languages. i'll say, chinese/japanese/korean probably have vastly different sides of the internet, whereas spanish/portuguese/russian seem to live along the same line of the internet more or less while being separate still. do you want cool languages? maybe even pick a constructed language, like toki pona. they may change the way you think in some way. do you want something else? at the end of the day, whichever language you learn is _your_ decision.
